Update on BF2 Online Ending

Recommended Posts

Some more information has been released in regards to Battlefield 2 Multi-player by EA. The way things stand at the moment, Battlefield 2 Online play will cease on June 30th 2014  :'(

Since GameSpy’s announcement, our teams have been working to evaluate options to keep services up and running.  Unfortunately, due to technical challenges and concerns about the player experience, we do not have a solution at this time. Online services for EA games on the GameSpy platform will be closed down at the end of June.

We know some of these games are still fan favorites, including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Command & Conquer games. We are still investigating community-supported options to preserve online functionality for these titles, such as multiplayer. Significant technical hurdles remain, and at this time we don’t have anything to announce.

You can read the full post here.

For a list of other EA titles effected check this link.

Hopefully they will add full p2p ranked support that would be great and would solve all their problems for the future of these games lol

I still think they will change there minds, BF1942 and BF Vietnam are still doing multiplayers

gamespy only handles the server browser for bfv/42 so you could still connect by IP to those servers. but you need gamespy to log in to your bf2 account so you can play the game online.

But you can still make an offline account and host a private internet lobby on an offline account that other people with offline accounts stored on their specific PCs can connect to your lobby with

do you mean like a virtual LAN over hamachi? I'm not sure if that would work since when you log in offline only singleplayer is available.

but even if its possible the amount of effort it will take will assuredly kill off what little is left of the aus bf2 community.

unless EA change their minds or some other party volunteers to maintain the account servers there won't be any more BF2 after June 30th.

This looks and sounds very promising, well worth checking out. Listing their current progress they have already by-passed the gamespy account issue.

Goal

To bypass the death of Gamespy servers and offer a patch to continue service of Battlefield 2 and allow players to login, browse servers and more. We will be redoing the BFHQ Stats system and plan on releasing an unofficial update to fix any issues left over from the 1.5 update from 2009.

We have many things planned for ReviveBF2, here are a few things we’re actively working on and have planned. As well as other possible suggestions that may come to life.

  • Bypass Gamespy Login and Account Database - Completed!

  • Purchased Battlelog.co - Completed!

  • Purchased Dedicated Server - Completed!

  • Recreate BFHQ Stats Database - In Progress

  • Increase Render Distance on maps (No longer limited to older hardware) - In Progress

  • Recreate Server Browser - In Progress

  • Drop Min User To start Game to 2 Players - In Progress

  • Backing Up Gamespy Stats - In Progress

  • Patch known issues - Not Started

  • Implement Community Maps - In Progress

They have some polls running as to some of the things players may like to see in an update to the game, check them out here.

More information can be found here.

There is also a petition to keep these games alive, if you're interested in signing it, you can do so here.

not sure increasing draw distance is a good idea but other than that this looks pretty good.
